Tanushree is a political scientist whose research explores the mechanisms through which representation lowers gender inequality and equalizes access to political opportunity and development for marginalized groups. She is developing a novel theory about the representation of women in politics, arguing that women’s success as politicians is determined at least in part by their ability to generate lower-level grassroots activism among other women. In her other work, she investigates how cultural norms (such as superstitious beliefs) and the persistence of economic or status inequality shape gender inequalities.
