Gender Differences in Volunteer's Dilemma: Evidence from Teamwork Among Graduate Students

Date:

Location:

WAPPP Cason Seminar Room, Taubman 102
Pinar Dogan, Lecturer in Public Policy, Harvard Kennedy School

In this seminar, Pinar Dogan examines the Volunteer's dilemma using data from room bookings at Harvard Kennedy School. She finds that female students volunteer significantly more than male students in booking rooms for team meetings. Pinar also finds the gender difference in undertaking such tasks to be statistically and quantitatively more significant when students have limited interaction prior to teamwork. Even though booking a room involves a relatively small cost in lost time, Pinar explains how these costs can add up and contribute to gender stereotyping in the allocation of tasks in other team settings.
